I conducted a feasibility study for English 212, Technical Writing. The purpose of the study was to determine if it would be feasible to open the Muldoon gate of the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson 24/7. I wanted to study this topic because there seemed to be many factors pointing toward opening the gate 24/7. These factors included the proximity the gate had to on base amenities like the hospital/emergency room and hundreds of residential units within a mile of the gate. Off base employment and entertainment opportunities were very close as well, including a movie theater, retail stores, a home improvement store and several restaurants. I found research suggesting that access to these things was important to military members and their families. Furthermore, research showed that the gate’s hours had been expanded three times in the last four years.

To building on that research, I administered a questionnaire to 16 classmates to collect information about opening the gate 24/7. I also researched the local businesses and their hours of operations.

In the end I found that there was little demand to open the gate 24/7. This was based on the questionnaire data as well as comparing hours of local businesses and amenities to those of the Muldoon gate. The differences were minimal. I did pick up on another line f possible research regarding expanding the Muldoon gate hours: traffic.

Overall, I recommended that the Muldoon gate be kept open at the current hours and that administrators continued to monitor the demand for expanding those hours. I also recommend that future research be conducted to study the traffic at the Muldoon gate and how changing the gate hours might affect it.
